Funky Monkey Bars Sponsors Rising Tennis Star on His U.S. College Journey
At Funky Monkey Bars, we believe in backing Aussie talent, especially when it comes to chasing bold dreams. That’s why we’re proud to announce our sponsorship of James Hardy—a passionate young tennis player from Perth who’s heading to South Carolina to play college tennis and study at Converse University.
James graduated from Applecross Senior High School in 2024, where he was Tennis Captain in Year 12 and part of their elite tennis program. His drive, focus, and commitment on and off the court has earned him this incredible opportunity to continue his tennis journey while pursuing a business degree in the U.S.
We sat down with James to talk about his journey, challenges, and what lies ahead.
Q&A with James Hardy
What made you start tennis, and how old were you?
I started tennis at age 4. My dad worked at a Health and Leisure Club in Perth that offered tennis, so I jumped into group lessons and progressed through the junior development pathway. I eventually began private coaching with Tennis Academy Perth (Mike Gill) and started competing in pennants and tournaments.
Which clubs have you played for?
Kardinya, Manning, Blue Gum, Applecross, and Kings Park.
How did you balance competitive tennis and schoolwork?
It wasn’t easy, but I was determined to succeed in both. I knew strong academic and athletic results would increase my chances of receiving offers from U.S. colleges. I’ve been working towards this goal for years.

What were the biggest challenges?
As much as I love Perth, the opportunities to grow after high school were limited. Thankfully, Applecross SHS’s Tennis Program gave me the chance to travel and play competitively across Australia. One of my proudest moments was representing WA in the Pizzey Cup.
And your most fulfilling moments?
Definitely the Pizzey Cup in Tasmania. Playing at that level brought out my best tennis. I was honoured to receive the Commitment and Determination Award for Team WA. Also, being named Tennis Captain in Year 12 meant a lot to me.
What kept you focused?
My competitiveness and discipline. I always want to improve and never give up.
Why choose a U.S. University?
The level of sport in the U.S. is on another level. I’ve known for a while that playing college tennis there was the next step for me.
What are your hopes for your first year at Converse University?
I hope to play my best tennis yet and contribute to a strong international team. I’m also looking forward to diving into my business degree and growing on and off the court.
What will you miss most from home?
Definitely my family—and Mum’s cooking!
Any final thoughts?
Even with a strong sports scholarship, this journey comes with a lot of costs. I’m incredibly grateful to Funky Monkey Bars for their support—it’s helping make my dream a reality.
